While the hiking season of 2014 started out mellow in South Florida, it dropped some significant water on hikers as they continued through Northeast Florida and the Panhandle. 2014 was the first season for hikers to experience the new Kissimmee River section, as it switched from the west side of the river to the east side at the very end of December 2013. This was also the first year for the new Southern Terminus marker to be set in place in a large piece of limestone in front of the Oasis Visitor Center at Big Cypress National Preserve.
